Every Hint That Oshi no Ko's Ruby is Secretly LGBTQ+

While sexual orientation isn't something Oshi no Ko has delved into, there have still been hints that Ruby is LGBTQ+, and here's a breakdown of them.

Warning: Contains spoilers for Oshi no Ko volume #8.Oshi no Ko has been subtly hinting that Ruby is secretly LGBTQ+ for a while now, and here’s a breakdown of everything that points in that direction. While Oshi no Ko creators Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari have never published anything that explicitly falls into the yaoi or yuri genres, both creators have experience with incorporating LGBTQ+ themes into their works. For example, Yokoyari’s previous work, Scum’s Wish, has a lesbian character in Sanae, whose sexuality is explored across the series, and in Akasaka’s Kaguya-sama: Love is War, the story slowly develops a romance between Chika and Hayasaka that’s implied to have become a full-fledged relationship by their adult years.

The team behind Oshi no Ko has clear experience with putting LGBTQ+ themes in their works, and that shows itself again with how Ruby has been heavily hinted to be an LGBTQ+ character. While the series doesn’t directly call attention to Ruby’s sexuality, the way that she’s interacted with various characters, in addition to her personal motivations, does a lot to imply that she’s meant to be read as LGBTQ+. That sort of representation would always be good to see, but the fact that it comes from someone who’s ostensibly the deuteragonist of the series works to give it even more importance, overall.

Why Oshi No Ko’s Ruby Is Implied To Be LGBTQ+

The main reason why Ruby is implied to be an LGBTQ+ character stems largely from her interactions with various female characters in Oshi no Ko. For example, Ruby openly ogles Minami’s large chest when they first meet, and not only does she gush over Frill to the point that Aqua comments about her being infatuated, but she even has a heart in her eye while doing so. There are also Ruby’s interactions with Ai, as not only was Ruby incredibly eager to breastfeed off of Ai as a baby, but as Sarina, she had hearts in her eyes when talking about how cute Ai was.

Moments like those greatly support the idea of Ruby being attracted to girls, but at the same time, Ruby has shown far more explicit attraction to men, as well. In chapter #77, while visiting the town where Aqua and Ruby once lived as Goro and Sarina, Ruby not only revealed to Akane that she’s in love with Goro, but that part of her motivation for becoming an idol was to one day become the kind of person Goro would marry. With that taken into account, the most likely conclusion to draw is that Ruby is attracted to boys and girls in some way.

Why Oshi No Ko Having An LGBTQ+ Character Is Great

Something that makes Oshi no Ko’s LGBTQ+ representation especially good is how Ruby is the deuteragonist of the series. When an anime not marketed as LGBTQ+ has an LGBTQ+ character, it’s often someone who doesn’t factor into the plot that much, so someone like Ruby, the most important character in the series after Aqua, being LGBTQ+ matters even more.

Oshi no Ko has done a lot to set up Ruby as an LGBTQ+ character, and that, of course, is great to see. While people can naturally find LGBTQ+ content in anime and manga, it’s still far from common to see it in stories that aren’t explicitly marketed as such, so Oshi no Ko doing that goes a long way toward positive representation. The fact that both the anime and the manga are so popular is especially good for that, as it means that there will be more chances for someone to see Oshi no Ko’s positive LGBTQ+ representation as it's currently exemplified by the character of Ruby.
