Maui Comic Con will return to the University of Hawai’i Maui College from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 9 and 10, featuring a cosplay competition, POG tournament and artists from Hawaii as well as Disney, Netflix and Marvel.
The convention, presented by Gerdel Studios, is free to the public.
Returning artists include Steve Leialoha, Trina Robbins, Mog Park and Frank Cho. Making their Maui premieres are Ryan Ottley (“Invincible”), Willie Ito (Disney), Peter Shinkoda (“Daredevil” on Netflix) and Rick Leonardi (Marvel). Also booked is acclaimed comics writer Gail Simone, best known for her work on “Wonder Woman,” “Birds of Prey” and “Jessica Jones,” along with Joshua Sky, best known for his “Heavy Metal” writing.
More than 40 local artists will showcase their original art, including Sam Campos, creator of “Pineapple Man,” as well as Todd Bernardy, DJ Keawekane, B. Miyo, Lucky Holland, Conny Jolitz, Anh Vu and many more.
The convention will also feature the Night Darling Cosplay Competition. Prizes will be awarded for both the adult division, which takes place Dec. 9, and keiki division, which is set for Dec. 10. Sign-ups for the competition will be online, with limited in-person registration the day of the event. Check-in for the competition at the convention runs from 9 to 11 a.m. both days, with pre-judging at noon and winners announced on stage at 1 p.m.
This year’s event also features the premiere of the Official Maui Comic Con POG tournament. Free POG starter kits will be given to all children attending the event while supplies last. Prizes will be given for multiple wins and for the most wins at the end of each day.
Local vendors will also be on hand, with 7Sketches, Enjoy Comics and Makali’i bringing along comics, collectibles and pop-culture goods from across the islands. Stores from Hawaii island and Oahu will be flying over to participate.
Both days of the convention will also feature food trucks Da Blessing, Maui Mui Company and Dee’s Poi Mochi.
